Say it ain't so

Ally Macca dit:

From what i can see on the board, am i right in concluding that this song isn't about the british miners strike of the early 70s, i always thought that the gentleman referred to was Joe Gormley, then leader of the NUM, so am i wrong, say it ain't so?!

Hi Ally,

Thanks for your message. I have never heard of the Joe Gormley version, but it's quite interesting to link it to Murray Head's song. Where did you get it from? The only explanation I know is the one you can read here : http://www.murrayhead.org/Forum/explsias.jpg

Mind you, the fact that so many people believe they recognise someone while Joe is not supposed to be anyone in particular shows the song uses just the right words (imo).

i suppose my thinking is that the song came out in the mid 70s, at that time the british miners were in dispute with the government. joe gormley was one of the leaders of the national union of mineworkers (NUM). the lyrics of the song with references to "the union and the empire", "money has gotten scarce", having played his trump card etc actually do fit in with my theory, i do accept though that it is probably inaccurate but does make a poignant story nonetheless.

best wishes

Many people often ask the meaning of "Say It Ain't So, Joe" or how it was written. Here is an explanation given by Murray Head:

"Say It Ain't So, Joe" was provoked by a seventies documentary on Richard Nixon prior to his resignation. The presenter was asking the editor of a small town newspaper outside Washington, how, in the face of conclusive evidence and proof, his readers could still show such undying support for the president they elected. The editor likens the situation to a scandal in the twenties, when Joe Jackson, the famous baseball player, was rumoured to have taken a bribe to sink his team in the final of the World series. His fans hung around the stadium chanting "Say it ain't so Joe".
